The Darkroom

Light in, silver out. A darkroom is a light-tight room where film becomes a negative and a negative becomes a print, lit only by a red safelight that photo paper can't see.

What happens here

Film goes in. A print comes out.

Every picture that leaves this room takes the same three steps. There's no screen and no undo: what you do at the enlarger is what ends up on the paper.

  1. 01

    Expose

    Light hits the film in your camera and leaves a latent image. It's really there, it just can't be seen yet.

  2. 02

    Develop

    Chemistry brings that latent image up into a visible negative, then fixes it so light can never change it again.

  3. 03

    Print

    An enlarger projects the negative onto paper under a red safelight. Slide the paper into developer and the picture appears.

The space

A fully working community darkroom.

Three enlargers (35mm all the way to 4×5), a full wet line, a light table, and shelves of chemistry. Everything you need to take a roll of film from negative to finished, hand-made print, in black & white and color.

The first photograph

Nicéphore Niépce coated a pewter plate with light-sensitive bitumen and aimed it out his window for the better part of a day. The result, View from the Window at Le Gras, is the oldest surviving photograph made in a camera.

1839

The daguerreotype

Louis Daguerre unveils the first practical process; France buys the patent and gives it to the world.

1841

The calotype

Fox Talbot's paper negative lets a single exposure make many prints. The true ancestor of film.

1851

Wet collodion

Glass negatives sharpen the image, but the plate has to be coated, shot, and developed within minutes.

1871

The dry plate

Gelatin emulsions can wait, freeing photographers from the portable darkroom tent.

1888

Kodak

"You press the button, we do the rest." Roll film puts a camera in anyone's hands.

1925

The Leica

35mm film makes the camera small enough to carry everywhere, and modern photojournalism is born.

1935

Kodachrome

Color photography finally arrives in a form ordinary people can shoot.

1948

The Polaroid

Edwin Land's instant film develops a finished print right in your hand.

1975

The first digital camera

Kodak engineer Steven Sasson builds a camera that needs no film. The beginning of the shift.

2005–2012

The retreat

As digital takes over, films and papers are discontinued and darkrooms go dark by the thousand.

Today

The revival

A new generation returns to film for the very things digital removed: patience, permanence, and a print made with your own hands. Community darkrooms like this one keep it going.

History

Nearly two centuries of silver.

Since the 1830s, almost every photograph ever made passed through a room like this one. The silver-gelatin print, light-sensitive silver suspended in gelatin on paper, has carried the medium for more than 150 years.

It's a craft handed down by doing: the feel of the paper, the smell of the fixer, the timing you learn in your hands. Every print is a little different, and that's the point.

Why it matters now

Keeping the craft alive.

In an age of infinite, instant, disposable images, and now pictures made by machines that never saw the light, the darkroom insists on the opposite. It's slow. It's physical. It asks you to make one image, carefully, with your own hands.

Community darkrooms like this one keep the knowledge, the equipment, and the space from disappearing. Every workshop and open-lab session passes the craft on to the next person who wants it. That's the real preservation project.
